What is TCM Insomnia
In TCM, insomnia is viewed as a disruption in the body's balance of Qi (vital energy), Yin and Yang energies, Blood, and the functions of the organs, rather than solely a symptom to be treated in isolation. Insomnia is considered a manifestation of disharmony within the body's energy systems and may be associated with various patterns of imbalance, such as Liver Qi stagnation, Heart Fire, Spleen deficiency, Kidney Yin deficiency, or Blood deficiency, among others.
Causes of Insomnia from TCM Perspective
Liver Qi Stagnation (肝气郁结)
Emotional stress, frustration, or unresolved emotions can lead to Liver Qi stagnation, which interferes with the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body and disturbs sleep.
Excessive Heart Fire (心火亢盛)
Excessive Heart Fire refers to a pattern where there is an imbalance of energy in the heart meridian, resulting in excessive heat or hyperactivity. This condition is often associated with symptoms such as insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, and vivid dreaming.
Spleen Deficiency (脾虚)
Weakness or deficiency in the Spleen's ability to transform and transport nutrients can result in insufficient Blood and Qi to nourish the Heart and Spirit, leading to insomnia and poor sleep quality.
Kidney Yin Deficiency (肾阴虚)
Deficiency of Kidney Yin, which represents the body's cooling, nourishing, and calming energy, can result in heat rising upward and disturbing the Heart, leading to sleep disturbances, night sweats, and restlessness.
